According to The Telegraph, a recent discovery by scientists at McGill University shows that mice become stressed and more timid when they can smell a man nearby, but the presence of a woman has no noticeable effect on them. As The Telegraph states, the findings may help explain why women are often portrayed as being more afraid of mice and rats as the vermin are less frightened when there are no men around.

Scientists think that the chemical signals that all animals produce, called pheromones, are responsible for the animal's fear. Pheremones are produced by animals to mark out territory, and to trigger subconscious sexual attraction, men are known to produce more of these pheromones than women. The Telegraph writes, rats and mice that detect the smell of a male nearby believe themselves to be under threat.

So if you are looking to avoid our small, long tailed friends, try borrowing smelly male clothing (if you can bear it!) as this could help you scare the mice away. But not for long, as the animals get accustomed to the unknown smell and loose their fear within an hour! However we are sure that most of our readers cats do a more effective job at keeping the mice at bay than some smelly old clothing!

Would you agree?

Better yet is coyote or wolf urine, but that's a little difficult to collect ....

If you sprinkle a man's urine around the border of your property, it will discourage dogs from coming to do their "business" in your yard. But you need to renew your turf markings after it rains. >>>
